I had my students work alone with grid paper for about 5 minutes. There are 6 different congruent shapes (including the one pictured on the paper), but I don't tell them that right away. I told them to find as many as they could, most found from 1-3 alone in 5 minutes.

After the 5 minutes was up, we discussed as a class about other ways to find the figures. Students started to discuss using something to act out the process so I gave them foam cubes (from the $1 bins at Target!) After discussing, I let students work in pairs to compare answers for about 8 minutes. When there was 2 minutes left, I told them they needed 6 figures total.

Other students used a puzzle-like strategy to solve. |
